Ebenezer and Phoebe Brown were the first pioneers to settle in the “South Willow Creek” area in 1849. A son of Scottish immigrants, Brown raised cattle to sell to other pioneers heading west to the California gold fields. The area was first called Draperville in honor of Brown’s brother-in-law, William Draper III, who was the first presiding elder of the town’s small Mormon congregation. Brown donated the land to build a fort when Indian trouble loomed; however, trouble never materialized and Draper Historical Park now stands at the site of the old fort. Porter Rockwell, a bodyguard of famous Mormon prophet Brigham Young, often frequented Draperville and the longest trail in town is named for him - the Porter Rockwell Trail.
Thanks to the “making do” perseverance of the early Pioneers, modern Draper relishes a high quality of life. Home to a cluster of high-tech industries, the city is also a recreational paradise. Neighborhood parks offer basketball, tennis, soccer, volleyball and picnic areas. Numerous nature trails such as Aquaduct, Bonneville Shoreline, Cherry Canyon Lodging, Jordan River Parkway, Lone Peak, Oak Hollow and Old Jacob’s Ladder offer extensive hiking and outdoor recreation. An appreciation of the arts runs deep in Draper. The Historical Society Museum houses photographs of early theatrical performances, bands and jazz groups dating back to the first pioneers. The Draper Visual Arts Foundation assists Draper Elementary School in the care and preservation of each piece of original art purchased. The Park School in Draper center, built in the neo-classical style of architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The building has served as Draper City Hall since the city’s incorporation in 1978. In addition to the historical sites and world-class skiing, city residents also enjoy close proximity to the Salt Lake City International Airport, NBA Jazz Basketball games, the Utah Symphony, Ballet West and several unique national ,state and local celebrations. Rich with the pioneer legacy of hard work, Draper is quickly becoming a progressive, suburban city. |
